The summer of 1997 saw the world premier of Disney's Hercules
animated motion picture in New York City. As part of the extravaganza,
Disney imported the world famous Main Street Electrical Parade from
California and had it perform across 42nd Street from the Amsterdam
Theater, and then up New York's 5th Avenue until it reached Central
Park.
The event included a live TV special from in front of the
Amsterdam Theater, a special stage show in the theater for the
invited guests and the custom performance of the Electrical Parade
alone the 3 mile parade route of Manhattan. I heard numbers as
high as 2 million people lines the parade route that evening to see
a once in a lifetime performance. A custom sound system was
developed and installed along the 3 miles parade route to recreate
the same conditions as those at Disneyland as the parade floats
passed by.
Kerry, standing in the white t-shirt on the left, has the single
distinction as being the only person in the entire 25 year history
of the Main Street Electrical Parade to have driven a float in each
of the years that it has been performed. For me (standing
behind the camera) being able to take part was a huge honor to
reprise my role as the leader of a very special parade.
