Most events that people are associated with see an event
physically go up in a few days and come down in a matter of
hours. A really big event like the Atlanta Summer Olympics
requires years of planning and months of setup and
preparation. On the back-end clean up and restoring facilities
also requires an Olympic effort.
The crew above spent 5 days simply locating, collecting, sorting
and loading steel barricades used in and around the Olympic Stadium
Cluster Facilities. The barricades were used in such high
numbers that they had to be trucked in from around the
country. At one point I was dealing on the phone with all four
corners of the globe researching past events and manufacturers that
I could rent or buy enough barricades to fill all the needs of
Atlanta.
Cooking two eggs is a pretty simple procedure, but cooking 50,000
eggs is a totally different exercise. That is what an Olympics
is like when you make the comparison. Storing 50,000 eggs
alone, and then moving them around could stump someone not prepare
for what it will really take if the logistics are not planned
out. My expertise in the planning of logistics is what I have
come to specialize in these many year in my career. Knowing
what it take to get jobs done if they are technical in nature or a
chain of very complex interlinked events.
Some of the things that was responsible for during my time in
Atlanta were...
- Developing a complete program to re-label every sign at
every stadium or facility being used by the Olympics. The
program also include a signage program to guide spectators from
public highways, all the way to their seats at a stadium as part of
the way-finding program. The program included graphic design,
French translations, manufacturing, distribution, and installation
of the sign as well as the design and manufacture of custom fixtures
and structures.
- Ensure that during the Opening Ceremonies all of the
17,000 athletes could be served a dinner meal with full beverages
all at one time as they arrived prior to the start of the ceremonies
outside the Olympic Stadium. Plan the storage, transport and
distribution of the portable meals made at an offsite
location. |
